hypovolemic shock

In the acute phase of severe burns, massive plasma leakage from damaged capillaries into the interstitium leads to a rapid loss of intravascular volume, causing hypovolemic (burn) shock within the first 24 hours. This is why aggressive fluid resuscitation guided by formulas such as the Parkland formula is essential. Oliguria rather than polyuria is expected, and venous thrombosis or hyperlipidemia are not features of the immediate post-burn period.
